The Ref. 1680, known as the "Red Submariner," is the first Submariner Date model in Rolex history, produced from 1967 to 1979. The early "Red" versions (1967-1975) feature the iconic red "SUBMARINER" text on the dial, making them highly collectible and sought after by enthusiasts worldwide.

Historical Significance: The 1680 represents a milestone in Submariner evolution as the first date model. The red "SUBMARINER" text (through various Mark I-VI dial variants) remains the only time Rolex used colored text on a Submariner dial. Some examples developed a rare "tropical" brown dial patina, now extremely desirable to collectors. Production transitioned to white text in the mid-1970s before the reference was discontinued.
